Learn how to solve word problems carefully!

WALT understand and solve addition and subtraction word problems.


Success criteria: I know this when I write my workings for each problem to reach the answer.

1.Tracey and Paula went rock hunting.
They found 11 rocks altogether.
Tracey found 3 more rocks than Paula.
How many rocks did Tracey find?
11-3=7

 2. Jesse wrote a number on a piece of paper.
She subtracted 5 from it and got a number equal to the sum of 3 and 6.
What number did Jesse write?
3+6=9, ___- 5= 9, so 14-5=9

3.9 penguins were on the ice.
There were 3 more penguins on the ice than in the water.
How many penguins are there altogether?
9-3=6(water) 9+6=15(ice)

4.Ricky bought 15 tickets.
He went on the Rocket first.
Then he went on the Twister.
How many tickets did he have left?
15-3=12,  12-5=7


5. Tim caught 6 ladybugs.
Ali caught 7 and Jon caught 5.
The children put some of their ladybugs in a big jar.
The jar then had 8 ladybugs. 
How many ladybugs were not placed in the jar? 

6+7+5=18 18-8=10
